ABOUT THE PARTNER ORGANIZATION
The Assaita College of Teacher Education is a teacher-training institute located in Afar Region of Ethiopia. The College has partnered with VSO Ethiopia and Cuso International, through this placement, to build the capacity of its teaching staff to deliver quality English language instruction.
THE VOLUNTEER’S ROLE
The general purpose is to promote the English language proficiency and English language teaching capacities of teacher educators in Assaita College of Teacher Education.
Specific Objectives:
•Assist university instructors to train students in English effectively
•Provide ELT and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) training in active learning mode for academic staff and students by carrying out learning needs assessments
•Organize and facilitate different English language programs
•Provide methodology training in required areas, support staff in materials and visual aids development
•Liaise with ELIP and VSO resource center to build a resource center in the university and build the capacity of the Ethiopian counterpart in the management of the center
•Work alongside the Higher Diploma Program (HDP), which is both focused on continuous professional development (CPD) of teacher educators across the Ethiopian education system and oversees the smooth running of the program
•Provide management and advisory support to the implementation of ELIP and other related CPD programs in the university and the surrounding schools
•Develop materials for the next phase of ELIP training
•Conduct monitoring and evaluation of ELIP and share learning within the university and other relevant ELIP stakeholders
•Participate in ELIP workshops, conferences and working with a team of volunteers and Ethiopians assigned to the program across Ethiopia
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential requirements
•Minimum of Bachelor degree Education, or qualification in TEFL or related field with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
•Experience of active learning, student-centered teaching, continuous assessment and action research
•Experience in working with teaching/learning resources, or developing basic teaching/learning resources for specific purposes
•Ability to work with limited resources and practical problem solving skills
•Flexible, adaptable and willing and able to work in partnership with other English Language Quality Improvement Centre Co-coordinators
•Experiences implementing gender specific activities and willing to support female trainees in their education and in gender specific matters
Desirable
•Experience of staff development; working colleagues to introduce and manage quality changes
•Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to create a supportive atmosphere in classroom and working groups
•Good oral and written communication skills
TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:
•Attendance at a Cuso International assessment day (candidates must cover the first $150 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs)
•Travel and accommodation costs associated with pre-departure training
•Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency)
•Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and comprehensive health insurance
•Accommodation while overseas
•A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed
•Quarterly payments to support you in your placement
•Modest support for accompanying partners
